Marionberries are a cross between the Chehalem and Olallieberry. The Olallieberry has the physical characteristics of the classic blackberry, but it is genetically about two-thirds blackberry and one-third red raspberry. The Chehalem berry is a cross between the Himalayan blackberry and the Santiam berry, which is itself a cross between the California blackberry and the Loganberry! Developed by the USDA Agricultural Research Service at Oregon State University in 1956, marionberries were named after Marion County in Oregon.
