The 'Ned's Northern Belle' Sweetbay Magnolia is a cold hardy (Zone 3) magnolia that produces tropical looking large white blossoms that open on the branches from May through July! From them flows a rich and vanilla-like perfume, which spreads across the garden for hundreds of feet, even drifting through open windows! Beautiful and glossy dark green foliage makes a luscious backdrop for these delicate fragrant blooms. Even the leaves of this Magnolia have a sweet bay like fragrance hence the name "sweetbay". Foliage is evergreen and holds well through winter in Zone 4 and up. Flowers are followed by unique bright red cone shaped fruits for a bit of late season interest!
